Student Activities Crew plans Earth Day celebration
April 13, 2014
Spring is in the air and with Earth Day approaching, the Student Activities Crew (SAC) has been working to create an Earth Day event for students on campus.
On April 22 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., students will be able to create their own terrariums in celebration of Earth Day. Teal Porrini, senior painting major, and Lisa Patomos, sophomore education major, came up with the idea to host the event on Earth Day, which will include a “Make your own Terrarium” event.
“Celebrating Earth Day is important because we need to work toward leaving as little of a carbon footprint as possible and leaving this world a better place for future generations.“
Students who attend the event will take varieties of plants, including cacti and succulents, and make small biospheres in recycled glass mason jars or hanging fixtures. The final product is the students’ to keep.
“I think it’s a nice idea,” said Joe Pochis, senior nutrition major. “The environment is incredibly important and reestablishing in students the responsibility of maintaing organic life is a great way to spread the importance.”
A good turnout is expected, according to Patomos, especially since she believes that terrariums are popular and trendy.
“Being Eco-friendly is important in our society and SAC is doing our small part to promote it this year,” said Patomos.
