The Wood Word got a sneak peek of Marywood’s production of Bright Star earlier this week and some special behind the scenes looks. The musical takes its viewers back and forth through time between 1923 and 1946 following the life of the lead, Alice Murphy, played by Mikaela Clark. When asked about her involvement in Marywood Theater Mikaela, a sophomore and secretary of the Marywood Players, said that “[she] really enjoyed it and it’s a lot of fun and we have a lot of really talented people to work with… it’s a wild show with a lot of belting and dancing, but it’s been so exciting everyone is super supportive, I love all the people here and we all help each other as a group”.
During a scene in the first act there is an on stage quick change and when head of costumes Maddie Kelly was asked about what went into making that quick change happen she said “that a lot of teamwork and communication goes into it, being prepared to fix things when they break… being focused on not looking panicked”. A few days before opening Maddie had to find a costume to be able to come on stage to help with the quick change in order to make it happen fast enough to keep up with the choreography, and has since practiced many times to get ready for opening night.
The show opened Thursday at 7:30pm in the Performing Arts Center, and has three more showings, Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm, and Sunday at 2:00pm.
