Joseph X. Garvey, vice president for Business Affairs and Treasurer of Marywood University, will retire on March 31.

According to a President’s Memo obtained by The Wood Word, Sister Anne Munley, I.H.M., Ph.D., President of the University, accepted his letter of retirement this morning. The memo said Garvey was retiring “for personal reasons.”

In the memo, Sr. Anne praised Garvey’s contributions throughout his time at Marywood, noting his “leadership and expertise” in many campus projects, including the renovation of several campus facilities, the completion of a new athletic field, as well as the construction of the Learning Commons and Morgan Motherhouse and Seminary Memorial Garden.

She also praised Garvey’s contribution to the Marywood community on a personal level, saying, “His positive spirit and can-do attitude have inspired a sense of hope for the future, especially for our students.”

According to the memo, the Board of Trustees has begun a search for an interim Vice President for Business Affairs. Garvey will continue to assist the University until June 30, the end date of his contract.

Last October, faculty took a vote of no confidence in both Sr. Anne and Garvey. Out of the 135 faculty members who voted, 88 percent voted no confidence in Garvey.
