OPINION: We’re a real news source, Mr. Trump

Daniel Smith, Asst. Opinion Editor

Dear Mr. Trump,

So, you denied us access to another one of your rallies.

You let us into your rally at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre back in April. But since then, you have denied us access to the last three rallies that you have held in the Scranton area, including the one earlier tonight at Lackawanna College.

Each time we requested press access to your events, your campaign officials told us the same thing: there was no room for us.

I find it hard to believe that there was no room for us at your July 27 and Nov. 7 events that took place in the 4,000 seat Lackawanna College gym in Scranton. I find it absurd that there was no room for us at your Oct. 10 event that took place in the 8,000 seat Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre, even though you let us in back in April.

Why was there no room for us, Mr. Trump? Are we not a real-enough news source to cover your events?

It’s not like we are inexperienced. We have covered almost all other campaign events that took place in our area. We had reporters at nearly every major local event held by the Hillary Clinton campaign. We had reporters at Bernie Sanders’ town hall event in the spring. When Jill Stein came to the area in September, our reporters were on the scene. Even your former rival Ted Cruz was kind enough to give us access to his rally.

We wanted to cover both Republican and Democratic events during the election so we could inform our readers about both candidates. Now, we look biased because we couldn’t fairly report on all sides. We never intended to be biased, Mr. Trump, but your campaign officials kept us out of your events.

We don’t know why you would not want us at your rallies, when our main audience–college students–is exactly the demographic you need to reach. You have been struggling to garner support from millennials, and coverage from college newspapers like The Wood Word possibly could have helped you appeal to this demographic.

You may not think we are a real news source, Mr. Trump, but that’s okay. We don’t need your approval. We know that the work we do is important, and we know whom we support. It sure isn’t you.
