SPORTS BRIEF: Gwynedd Mercy tops Marywood in women’s tennis championship rematch

Defending Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) champions Gwynedd Mercy University (GMU) defeated the Pacers’ women’s tennis team 7-2 yesterday afternoon.

With the loss, Marywood fell to 2-1 overall (1-1, CSAC) while the Griffins continued their undefeated streak in the 2016 campaign.

According to marywoodpacers.com, Gwynedd Mercy jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage by winning the doubles matches 8-2, 8-2, and 8-4.

Unfortunately for the Pacers, the Griffins never let up.

The Griffins’ top singles player Katie Garthaus defeated Abygail Doud, a sophomore architecture major, 6-0, 6-0. GMU’s Amanda Goff clinched the road win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over senior social work major Avery McCall.

A few highlights for the Pacers came from senior Melanie Kobela, a Spanish education major, at five singles and sophomore Nicole Sinclair, an early childhood/special education major, at six singles.

Kobela took care of Nicole Picciolo 6-2, 6-3, while Sinclair defeated GMU’s Amanda Gentry 6-1, 6-3.

The Pacers travel to battle Notre Dame of Maryland University before coming back home to square off against the University of Scranton next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
