On Saturday afternoon the Bulldogs of DeSales traveled to face the Marywood Pacers in a fall exhibition match. Both teams are looking to improve and get some action early in the year.
The women’s team had the better hand against DeSales taking them down 5-2. The Pacers were on fire all across the board.
The men’s team did not have as great of a showing, falling to DeSales 6-1. Even though the final showed a heavy favor for DeSales, that was not exactly the case. The Pacers fought hard and lost many close sets.
With some new rule changes coming to doubles this upcoming season, many players are still getting used to them. With the new rule change, the team that wins two of the three doubles matches receives one doubles match point, instead of the amount of the doubles matches won. Each singles match is worth one point. Four or more points are required to win the match.
The new changes are leading to mixed reviews on the views of doubles. Sophomore Kylie Kilgore claims that there are several more cons than pros.
“The only pro is that it cuts down on time,” said Kilgore. “The con is that it takes away valuable points that you could come back from if you were losing.”
Both men’s and women’s teams are looking forward to playing together more and getting better with each other everyday. Matt Wygonik, one of the team captains, is focused on both him and his teammates building confidence.
“As a team, I think just consistency as well as playing together,” said Wygonik. “It’s sometimes challenging, we don’t always play with each other [for doubles] all the time.”
The Pacers are looking to use the fall season to grow and are excited for what’s to come this upcoming spring.
