Men’s Basketball
Entering the week, junior guard Shilo Bivins was amongst the few on this week’s Atlantic East Conference Honor Roll, following his career-high scoring performance against Penn State-Hazleton.
Tuesday night, Marywood took a short trip north to face the Keystone College Giants. Marywood was first to score, foreshadowing the rest of the game, as the Pacers offense fired on all cylinders, shooting over 58% from the field, while connecting on 12 three-point attempts, as the Pacers would roll the Giants, 91-67. Graduate guard Trevor Seitz led the way for Marywood, totaling 19 points, as one of four Pacers to finish the evening in double digits.
The Pacers returned to play Friday, in the Electric City Classic, a two-day, round-robin style event, that the Pacers had dominated since the arrival of head coach Jon Showers. On day one of the Electric City Classic, Marywood faced the Bears of St. Joseph’s University Brooklyn. It was very much a back-and-forth affair in the first 13 minutes of the first half, before Marywood would finish the half on a 16-7 run. The Bears stayed within striking distance for the early stages of the second half, but Marywood was able to close out their second home victory in as many games, 79-65. Once more, Seitz led the way with 19 points.
The following evening, Marywood faced the Washington College of Maryland Shoremen. As the first half clock winded down, it seemed as if the Pacers’ bench would be unloaded, taking a 20-point lead with about six minutes on the clock. The Shoremen were able to trim the trail to 13 before the break. Nipping at the Pacers’ heels, they were able to tie the game at 62 a piece, with just under four and a half minutes remaining. With a couple of clutch conversions by Seitz and Brendan Franko, Marywood took a large enough lead to put the game out of reach, clinching its sixth straight Electric City Classic victory, 74-66. Franko was named as Electric City Classic MVP, following stellar performances, including his 20-point night versus the Shoremen.
Women’s Basketball
Similarly to the men’s squad, the Pacers week started with the Atlantic East Conference Honor Roll, with guards Olivia Ciullo and Megan Cavoli being tabbed with the nomination.
Wednesday night, the Pacers hosted the Keystone Giants, looking to stay unbeaten at Insalaco Arena. It was a high scoring frenzy in the first quarter, with both teams firing off at least 16 shots, while converting twice from beyond the arc, with the advantage being to Keystone. The second quarter was the complete opposite for the Giants, scoring just four points, as the Pacers would claim the lead, with Ciullo and Kendel Card being responsible for 17 of the 19 Marywood points. The third quarter resembled more of the first, though in favor of the Pacers, ahead by 16 before the fourth. Though Keystone would whittle the lead down, Marywood clinched another win, 68-61.
Nearly 24 hours later, Marywood would be back at it, hosting Cairn University, which was dealing with an interesting dilemma. With injuries galore to the roster, the Highlanders had just five active players. Despite the clear disadvantage, Cairn had a solid performance, led by Kailee Sobrino’s 33 points. Understandably so, Marywood would run away with this one, taking home their fifth win of the year, 77-52.
Men’s Cross Country
Marywood was able to send two runners to the NCAA Division III Championships, with Jack Baronski and Bryce Ryder representing the Pacers. Ryder’s performance was admirable, finishing the race in 25 minutes and 22.4 seconds. However, Baronski etched his name into the Pacers history books, one in which his name is frequently seen. He finished 34th, becoming the first Pacer to ever earn the honor of being an All-American runner.
