Men’s Basketball
Riding high on a four-game win streak and a victory in the Electric City Classic, Marywood’s men’s basketball team hosted nearby Wilkes University on Tuesday night. The Pacers entered the contest sitting at 5-1 with the Colonels at 4-1. The first half was a battle with the Pacers coming out on top, entering the half up 33-30.
The green and gold looked to continue this form in the second half, but a pair of double-digit runs for Wilkes pushed the game out of reach. A final score of 79-76 in favor of Wilkes brought Marywood’s winning streak to an abrupt end just before Thanksgiving break, dropping the record to 5-2.
Wilkes’ victory came off the back of a 58.62% shooting percentage in the second half, dwarfing the Pacers’ 38.71% from the same period. The Colonels also benefited from free-throws, making 17 of 24 compared to the Pacers, who made eight out of 12.
Sophomore guard Michel Loftin led the Pacers’ in scoring with 13 points. Fifth-year guard Trevor Seitz trailed close behind with 12 points, and junior forward Shilo Bivins led the team in rebounds with seven.
Marywood’s men’s basketball team will look to kickstart a new winning streak on Tuesday as the team travels to the Big Apple to take on New York University.
Women’s Basketball
Marywood’s women’s basketball team has enjoyed a successful start to the season. Going into Saturday’s matchup against Lebanon Valley College, the Pacers were 5-1 and in the midst of a dominant four-game winning streak, with three of those wins coming by double-digits. Lebanon Valley had less momentum, coming off a loss and sitting at 3-2.
It was clear that momentum didn’t matter as the first quarter came to a close, however. Lebanon Valley dominated, scoring 27 points and holding the Pacers to just six. Marywood battled back in the second, grounding the Flying Dutchmen 16-11. The Pacers entered the half down 38-22.
The third and fourth quarters followed the first quarter’s path. Lebanon Valley outscored Marywood 40-21 through both periods, bringing the game to a final score of 78-43. The game was both Marywood’s biggest loss and lowest point total of the season.
The Flying Dutchmen proved to be near-unstoppable from behind the arc, sinking seven of 13 three-point attempts. Though the Pacers shot 23 threes, the team was less efficient, only making six.
Senior guard Rachel McDonald led the Pacers in scoring with nine points, and sophomore forward Alli Griscavage followed with an impressive eight points in just 10 minutes of gametime.
Marywood’s women’s basketball team will look to rebound in Elmira, New York on Wednesday, as the Pacers take on Elmira College at 7 p.m.
Swimming and Diving
Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams partook in the inaugural Electric City Invitational Nov. 23-24. The event was initially slated to begin on the Friday prior, but all events were postponed until Saturday due to a snowstorm in the area.
The women’s team finished fourth place out of eight teams and scored 368 team points. Sophomore Emerson Gellert led the Pacers with a fourth-place finish in the 400 IM and a sixth place in the 200 butterfly. Senior Samantha Peck also had herself a day, recording top-eight finishes in the 1,650 free, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly.
The men’s team didn’t fare as well, finishing seventh place out of seven teams and notching a total of 120 team points. Freshman Alex McCarey had a team-best placement of sixth in the 100 back, while senior Nathan Grosnevor added a 10th-place in the 100 breast.
The University of Scranton won both team events.
Both teams will be hosting a tri-school event on Saturday, as SUNY-Delhi and Lycoming College travel to Scranton for an 11 a.m. meet.
