When we think of sports we tend to think of baseball, soccer, football, lacrosse and many others we’ve at least heard of even if we don’t necessarily follow them. These sports challenge our perspective of what truly makes a sport a sport.
Chess Boxing
Chess boxing is exactly what you think it is, it’s a sport that combines chess and boxing. Players alternate between a round of chess and boxing. A winner is determined when a player gets a checkmate or knocks the other player out.
Championship Pillow Fight
Did you dream of becoming an athlete as a child then you found you weren’t athletically inclined, but were good at pillow fighting? Well, you may not have lost your opportunity because Championship Pillow Fighting is real.
Championship Pillow Fighting involves two people getting into a boxing ring and hitting each other with pillows. They are not allowed to hit each other without the pillow. The winner is determined by who scores the most points.
Cheese Rolling
Cheese rolling also known as Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling is a popular sport in Gloucestershire in the UK. People in Britain roll down a hill after a wheel of cheese and whoever reaches the bottom first wins. Most emergency service workers are stationed at the hill where Cheese Rolling takes place.
Underwater Hockey
Underwater hockey is similar to regular hockey but isn’t exactly what one thinks of when they think of hockey. Hockey players are underwater and this is a no contact sport that focuses more on teamwork and formations. This sport is played globally but best known in New Zealand, Great Britain, France, Turkey, Australia, South Africa and Columbia.
Juggling
Juggling is typically associated with a circus. Though it requires physical skill coordination and practice like most sports, is it truly a sport? Juggling does have a championship, so while this is debatable there is a good argument for juggling to be considered a sport.
Extreme Ironing
Extreme ironing is when people iron in dangerous locations such as the side of mountains, in the sea, forest etc.
Rules of Extreme Ironing: participants must use ironing boards of a certain length, the irons should be made of real iron, and participants need to use at minimum a tea towel for garment size. The winner is determined by an article of clothing being free of wrinkles
Bossaball
Two teams face off in a game that combines volleyball, soccer and gymnastics. The game is played on an inflatable court with a trampoline. Whichever team makes it to 25 points first wins bossaball but if both teams make it to 24 points, whoever scores two additional points wins.
Axe/Hatchet and Knife Throwing
Axe/hatchet throwing is the more common unusual sport on this list because we have ax and some hatchet throwing places in Pennsylvania.
Axe throwing is also known as hatchet throwing. One game is three matches with five throws per participant and it’s another scoring based game. Knife throwing is the same idea with three practice throws and five competition throws. Highest score in knife throwings wins.
These sports are weird, unconventional and worth checking out for both sports fans and people who aren’t fans of sports alike.
