Baseball
Marywood University was swept by Neumann University on Sunday in an Atlantic East Conference baseball doubleheader. The Pacers fell by 9-2 and 8-5 scores. In game one Neumann scored five runs in the second inning to win over the Pacers. AJ Giannetti went 2 for 4 with a homerun and two RBIs. Evan Bruder and Nick Ruiz doubled. Austin Bausman took the loss with four strikeouts in 3 ⅔ innings.
In game 2 the Pacers fell to Neumann 8-5. Tristan Gatchalian batted 3 for 5 with two runs and an RBI. Giannetti went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. He had a stolen base and a hit-by-a-pitch. Marywood opened the game with a two-run lead in the first inning. After the Knights took the lead in the bottom of the frame, Marywood tacked on two runs in the third. Neumann responded again to tie the game in the bottom of the third. Adam Ginsberg singled in a run in the fifth.
On Tuesday, the Marywood Pacers traveled west to Lycoming College taking on the Warriors. The Pacers (12-15) went on to fold to the Warriors (20-15) in extra innings. In the third, Adam Ginsberg hit an RBI single, scoring Evan Bruder. AJ Kuzior followed with a two-run single to left field, scoring Ginsberg and Joel Ayers. Tying with Warriors 3-3 in the fourth and later in the seventh inning Marywood scored its fourth run on a wild pitch. Also in the inning, Kuzior hit an RBI single, giving the Pacers a 5-3 lead. Ethan Reccek took the loss for the Pacers. Reccek allowed one hit, one earned run and two walks in 1.1 innings of work.
The Pacers hosted the Eastern University Eagles on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader. The Pacers defeated the Eagles in game two, 12-7, after falling 10-4 in game one. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead, grabbing two runs in the top half of the first inning. Marywood answered quickly in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs of their own. After Christian Michak scored on a passed ball, Joel Ayers brought in Tristan Gatchalian to knot it at 2-2. Ayers then scored on a Kuzior RBI single just before Ginsberg crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Tanner Vicendese knocked in Will Hudson and Kuzior with an RBI double to extend the Pacer lead to 6-2. Six pacers saw the mound in game two, with Michael Conoscenti (2-0) collecting the win. Adam Anderson struck out two Eagles in his single inning of work.
In game one,the Pacers offense was led by Nick Ruiz, who went 2 for 2 with an RBI. Marywood took the lead in the fourth. Ruiz kicked it off with a RBI single. The Pacers had bases loaded with Gatchalian up to bat. Gatchalian drew the walk, tying the game 3-3. AJ Giannetti followed with a sacrifice fly, giving the Pacers the lead. Charlie Hamm and Kieran Beman each pitched an inning in relief, surrendering zero hits and zero runs.
On Friday afternoon, Marywood played host to the Neumann Knights (21-8, 7-3 AEC) in the first game of a three game set this weekend. The Pacers went on to drop the series opener 17-4. Gatchalian and Ayers each collected three hits in the contest. Michak, Bruder and Kuzior accounted for the other three Marywood hits. Danny Tiedemann (1-3) was credited with the loss for the Pacers.
Softball
The Pacers concluded their Atlantic East Conference play Saturday, hosting Immaculata. The Pacers (17-17, 7-3 AEC) went on to sweep the Mighty Macs (14-22, 5-5 AEC), 11-4 and 8-0. In game one, the Pacers had a season high of 19 hits. Riley Knott led the offense with four hits, tallying three RBIs in the contest. Immaculata scored first, as two runs crossed the plate in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half, Knott sliced the Mighty Macs lead in half with an RBI double to left field. Tori Para singled to left field, scoring Riley Marshall. Renee McDonald then tied the game with an RBI single. Hanley gave the Pacers the lead with an RBI groundout. Sarafinko added a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 5-3.
In game two Hanley led the Pacers offense, going 3-for-3. In the bottom of the second, Sarafinko put the Pacers on the board with an RBI single up the middle. Kat Davis drew a bases-loaded RBI walk to make it a 2-0 game. Para followed, plating Marywood’s third run on a fielder’s choice. In the third, Davis hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0. In the sixth, Knott singled to right field, plating Alex Dusman for Marywood’s seventh run. Marshall followed with a sacrifice fly for the Pacers’ eighth and final run. With the sweep, the Pacers secured the number two seed in the Atlantic East Conference tournament which begins on May 3. Marywood has one more regular season doubleheader on Tuesday, hosting SUNY Delhi.
The Pacers traveled to Dallas, Pa. for a matchup against Misericordia University for a non-conference doubleheader against the Cougars. The Pacers went on to drop the twinbill 7-2 and 10-9. In game one, Misericordia jumped ahead early, gaining a 5-0 lead after the first two innings. In the fourth, Marshall hit a two-run homerun, cutting the margin to 5-2. Brianna Voyer was in the circle for the Pacers. In six innings of work, Voyer allowed 12 hits, seven runs, five earned runs and three walks. In game two, Marissa Hoffman plated the first run of the game with a bases loaded walk. In the bottom of the first inning, Misericordia tied it with a RBI single. The Pacers scored six runs in the third inning. Jessica Hanley, Marley Sarafinko and Alex Dusman all drew bases loaded walks. Marywood scored its fourth run of the inning on an error. Misericordia went on to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh, winning 10-9. Jessica Plunkett started in the circle for the Pacers. Plunkett pitched 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits, nine runs, and 11 walks. Grace Lorah pitched 2.2 innings in relief, allowing two hits and an unearned run.
Men’s Tennis
Marymount had two sweeps in the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches to secure the point. Alex Corcoran and Jack Biggs trailed just 3-2 when the doubles point was decided. Eshan Degamwar defeated Corcoran 6-0, 6-2 in the top singles flight. Biggs fell 6-1, 6-2 to Jose Torrecillas in No. 2 singles. Fred Kloss fell 6-3, 6-0 to Singh Gunek in No. 3 singles. Leonardo Guzman was tied 1-1 in the fourth singles at the match’s completion. Marywood finishes the season with a 2-11 record.
Women’s Tennis
Marywood University advanced to the Atlantic East Conference women’s tennis championships with a 4-1 win over Marymount University on Friday. The Pacers’ return to the Atlantic East Championships for the second consecutive season. Marywood fell to the Saints in last year’s final. Marywood (8-8) earned the doubles point with wins in the second and third flights. Kylie Kilgore and Alex Vitale shutout their competition in the second doubles flight. Faith Kendricks and McKenna Seavey also blanked their opponents in No. 3 doubles. Vitale led 6-2 after the first set in the fourth singles match. Seavey trailed Peyton Johnson 3-1 in fifth singles. Gabriella Nowak lost 6-1, 6-0 to Nikhita Simhambhatla in the top singles flight.
Marywood fell to Pratt Institute in the Atlantic East Conference women’s tennis championship on Sunday. The Pacers fell to the Cannoneers by a 4-0 score. Marywood finishes the season with an 8-9 overall record. The third doubles team of Kendricks and Seavey trailed Victoria Delgado and Julia Ognibene by a 4-3 score. Abraham won the top singles flight by a 6-1, 6-0 score. Crespo had a shutout in the No. 3 singles. Pratt closed the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 5 singles.
Men’s Lacrosse
Playing in his final home game, senior John Scibello led the Marywood University men’s lacrosse team to a 13-12 win over Neumann University. The Pacers came back from a three-goal second-half deficit to oust the Knights. With the win, Marywood secures the third seed in the Atlantic East Conference tournament. The Pacers will travel to Marymount University on Saturday. Scibello scored six goals and an assist for seven points to lead the Pacers. He added seven ground balls. Thomas Carroll, Will Pieters and Antonio Cortez caused three turnovers. Ben Peters had five ground balls with two assists. Both Cortez and Wil Pieters collected five ground balls. Sean Bonhag and Joseph Keller both earned three ground balls. Offensively ,Ben Meighan totaled two goals and an assist. Dillon Kane scored twice. Luke Ament earned 10 ground balls from the faceoff. Ament had a goal and an assist. Marywood out-shot Neumann by a 54-38 margin. The Pacers had 54 ground balls to the Knights’ 44. Scibello scored twice within a seven-second span to retake the lead. After scoring an unassisted goal with 11:13 left, Ament won a faceoff and dished a pass to Scibello for the goal. Braden Travaglini made it a one-point game soon after. But Marywood used goals from Logan Sanders and Scibello to establish a 13-10 lead with 2:22 left in the game.
Neumann scored two goals down the stretch but were unable to get a shot off after the faceoff.
Marywood University was eliminated from the Atlantic East Conference men’s lacrosse playoffs with a 12-4 loss to Marymount University on Saturday in the semifinal. The Pacers finish the season with a 9-9 record. In a two-goal game at the break, the Saints outscored Marywood 7-1 in the second half. Dillon Kane finished with two goals. Ben Peters and Ben Meighan both scored once. John Scibello had an assist to complete his career with 224 points. Marymount outshot the Pacers by a 44-29 margin. The Pacers were a perfect 22 for 22 on clear attempts. Colin Trainor finished with 19 saves for the Pacers.
Women’s Lacrosse
Marywood suffered a 23-10 loss to Neumann University Wednesday in the Atlantic East Conference finale. The Pacers will enter the conference playoffs as a third seed. Marywood will rematch the Knights on Saturday in the semifinals. Kortney Harry led Marywood with five goals. Kaitlyn Smith had a goal and four assists with six draw controls. Avery Meighan scored twice with nine draw controls, four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Natalie Yilanjian scored a goal and an assist. Neumann’s Alena Catka scored seven goals and two assists. A total of 36 cards – 25 green, 11 yellow – were issued in the game.
Third-seeded Marywood University ended its season with an 18-14 loss to No. 2 Neumann University on Saturday in the Atlantic East Conference women’s lacrosse semifinals. The Pacers finish their season with a 9-8 overall record. After falling behind by five goals to begin the game, Marywood scratched back with four unanswered goals. Marywood led 12-11 late in the third quarter. Neumann went on a 7-1 run over the next 15 minutes to put the game away. Both Meighan and Smith led the Pacers with four goals and an assist for five points. It was the third-most single-game caused turnovers at Marywood. Alli Duncan had her first career hat trick. Jessica Banta provided a goal and an assist. Yilanjian secured six draw controls. In net, Jenny Keagy finished with a season-high 16 saves. Following the move to Chester, Marywood scored three straight goals to open the second half. Smith scored back-to-back woman-up goals to tie the game and take the lead. The two teams went tit-for-tat for six rounds. Smith scored a woman-down goal to take a 12-11 lead with 2:05 left in the third quarter. Neumann will travel to Marymount University in the final next weekend. The Saints beat Gwynedd Mercy 25-7 in the other semifinal.
