This year of music has had many hits, with a new spin on country with “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” a game-changing diss track that started conversations with “Not Like Us,” and brat summer. Members of The Wood Word staff have polled their picks on who will win what, where we primarily focused on pop, rap and country.
Album of the Year: Sabrina Carpenter – Short n’ Sweet
Sabrina Carpenter has been in the game for a while now, yet just recently she started receiving her flowers. Her newest album has solidified her as the newest pop princess, which has multiple hits like “Espresso” and “Taste.” Here at The Wood Word, her album has a 40% guess of winning Album of the Year.
Song of the Year: Chappell Roan – Good Luck, Babe!
The Drag Queen Superstar, Chappell Roan, has skyrocketed to fame this year, with the song “Good Luck, Babe!” being the main reason why. Almost half of The Wood Word staff is guessing that she will win this category.
Record of the Year: Sabrina Carpenter – Espresso
Although this category seems like a copy of Song of the Year, the Record of the Year takes the production and overall sound into its grading. “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter has an upbeat, somewhat tropical production that’s accompanied by whimsical and punny lyrics. It’s simple and catchy, simply put. Over half of The Wood Word staff believes that she will receive the Record of the Year, as well.
Best New Artist: Chappell Roan
Although she is not new, she has risen to the public eye just this year. Her single “Good Luck, Babe!” helped garner many new fans, which helped her 2023 album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” gain some traction this year. Once again, over half of The Wood Word staff believes she will take this award home.
Best Rap Album: Eminem – The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)
Eminem, also known as Slim Shady, has been rapping since the late 90s. His most recent release depicts the death of his persona and blends his hardcore rap with some comical lyrics. Exactly half of The Wood Word staff predicts he will win Best Rap Album.
Best Rap Performance: Kendrick Lamar – Not Like Us
The diss track about Canadian rapper Drake quickly became a hit since Lamar pointed out a lot of issues with Drake. To its catchy beat and witty lyrics, it’s no wonder why almost 60% of The Wood Word staff thinks he will win Best Rap Performance.
Best Pop Vocal Album: Sabrina Carpenter – Short n’ Sweet
The entire album showcased Carpenter’s quirky wording through several sexual innuendos, metaphors and puns. With many of her songs becoming popular this year, 40% of The Wood Word staff predicts she will win Best Pop Vocal Album.
Best Pop Solo: Sabrina Carpenter – Espresso
Around 40% of The Wood Word staff predicts that Carpenter will win Best Pop Solo. The commercial success of “Espresso” makes thinking otherwise hard.
Best Country Album: Post Malone – F-1 Trillion
Post Malone switched up his genre and became a country star. His album “F-1 Trillion” had multiple notable singles like “I Had Some Help” and “Pour Me a Drink” that proved Malone could do whatever genre he wanted to do.
Best Country Song: Post Malone – I Had Some Help & Shaboozey – A Bar Song (Tipsy)
The Wood Word staff had its first and only tie, between Post Malone stepping into the country scene and a new artist releasing a country-pop hybrid. If I had to say who I personally think will win, I think Shaboozey with “A Bar Son (Tipsy),” mostly due to its constant radio streams.
The Grammys are on CBS at 8 p.m. on Feb. 2.
