Up until the end of 2023, Grand Theft Auto VI was nothing more than a rumor. But after a massive data breach to the RockStar Games developers, they released the first trailer for the long-awaited sequel on Dec. 4, 2023.
With the trailer amassing over 243 million views, it’s obvious that people are looking forward to this. But after all the grand success that Grand Theft Auto V had, will the long-awaited sixth entry of the game actually be worth it?
For quick background information, GTA V was released on Sept. 17, 2013. To this day, it is still getting updates and has been a top-selling game across three generations of consoles. After almost 12 years, GTA V is still the third best-selling video game of all time, selling over 210 million copies.
To start out, GTA VI is set to release in the fall of this year; however, some people think this is a bad choice. While it has been said that GTA VI has been in development not long after the release of the fifth game, they only first showed it off just a little over a year ago.
The 2025 release date has flaws because there is always a high chance that the game isn’t fully complete upon this launch date. Call of Duty has been known to do this, release the game unfinished, then “drip feed” the other features and content in future updates.
This isn’t saying that RockStar Games can’t add content in future updates, but surely the community wants this game to take its time with the release.
Another factor that makes me question the worth of the game is GTA VI’s possible $100 price point. This is just speculation, but people are starting to think about this because GTA VI’s budget is over $2 billion.
Most games are usually sold at around $60, but with most games being made only for the next generation consoles, like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, the majority of games are selling for $70. With GTA VI being the most expensive game ever made, these price points most likely won’t cut it for RockStar.
GTA VI is not being made for the PS4 and Xbox One. While it’s unfortunate for the people who are still on these systems, it’s better overall for the gaming company. This allows RockStar to hold nothing back with what is possible with the graphics and performance of the game.
Finally, one of the biggest things that leads to the question of GTA VI’s worth is how much storage space the game may take up. On the Xbox Series S, GTA 5 Online takes up just a little over 100 gigabytes of storage. Considering the size of the city “Los Santos” and the content the online mode offers, cramming it all into that capacity of storage is impressive.
As previously mentioned, GTA VI is only next-gen and RockStar is truly going to push the possibilities of what these consoles can handle. This can cause the size of the game to increase drastically, but only time will tell.
While GTA VI is still supposedly a couple of months away, it’s hard not to get excited about it. There are certainly skepticisms to be had, but we will find out eventually if they were correct.
