With a wide variety of music genres, emerging artists and classic songs, it’s hard to feel like you’re in the loop with the “music talk.” This series is meant to help with that, and as someone who constantly listens to music, I think I am qualified to give a list. Of course, this is skewed to what I like, being hyper-pop to alt-rock. This entry’s focus is my personal hidden gems in the music world.
Fei – Fantasy
This slow, sultry K-pop song has been on constant repeat since I first heard it three years ago. It has a smooth synth that changes throughout the song, alongside Fei’s whispery and breathy voice, with a twist of innocence. The final chorus has a slight key change, elevating the finale. The song is all about being one’s fantasy, and the music video helps push that idea.
Coupdekat – soda pop!
Opening with an electric guitar and bubbly noises, the song begins softly until Coupdekat repeats the intro. The second time around saying “Climbing out my head,” the song adapts a fast trap beat as she repeats herself, just like how sod bubbles up until it “pops” where the breakdown is an amalgamation of different voices with the same beat. I like to say that this is a very tamed hyper-pop song. I definitely see her going somewhere, so go ahead and check her out!
boycomma – Je ne sais Quoi
My absolute favorite rock band is boycomma; sadly, they’re based in California and only really perform in Anaheim, so my chances of seeing them live are slim. However, I can still enjoy their stuff, like this song, which is my favorite whiny-rock anthem with simple lyrics wailing about how a girl looks at them.
Allegra Miles – wonderland <3
“wonderland <3” is the perfect title for this song; it’s like the euphoric feeling when you reflect on your favorite place, your wonderland. The song builds up to this all-around surrounding chorus that is filled with all different sounds; from a beachy twinkle sound to a fast-paced beat, it immerses you in Miles’ wonderland.
Yukari – Hang On
This slow, harsh beat opens the song as her echoey, glitchy voice enters. “Hang On” adapts a chill, fun guitar, reminding –at least to me– of the Minecraft soundtrack. The two collide with her hazy voice singing over the relaxing melody of the guitar.
Dev Lemons – quiet pains
Dev Lemons, who is also a part of the quirky “QUEEF JERKY,” likes to show off her versatility, with “quiet pains” showing a slower, serious side of her sound. This song came on shuffle as I drove back to school at night, starting this spring semester, which was the perfect first listen.
Loona – Stylish
Seeing this song live was truly life-changing. I went right before my first college semester—and right before the band ultimately disbanded. “Stylish” is an upbeat pop perfection with a heavy emphasis on synths in the chorus and a melody similar to Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer.” This is my go-to song to say as my favorite.
