Marywood Films’ second short film, “Cupid Shuffle,” will debut to the public at the Everhart Museum in Scranton on Friday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m., as well as in the Latour Room located in the Nazareth Student Center at Marywood University on Saturday, April 12 at 7 p.m.
The short film depicts a sapphic rom-com between two college students: Marina, portrayed by sophomore Yamilé Nader Almonte, and Avery, portrayed by sophomore Mary Miles. Both characters find themselves in a Halloween mix-up with none other than Cupid, portrayed by senior Ryan Glatzel.
“Originally, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to come back as director for this year, but I knew with [this film] that’s how I wanted to leave my mark on the school,” said senior Jonelle Symonies, director of “Cupid Shuffle” and founder of Marywood Films.
“My goal with Marywood Films was always to have something that outlives me, and that students can come here and be like, ‘I can actually do this in the real world and get experience here,’” said Symonies. “That was really important to me from day one.”
Symonies also stated that the film is a “representation of a subject matter that needs to be touched on,” regarding the LGBTQ+ community.
William Murphy, a new professor of the Multimedia Communication department and the adviser of Marywood Films, reflects on the group of students.
“The last adviser, Al Monelli, set up [Marywood Films] for success by helping them with hands-on stuff,” said Murphy. “I came into a situation where they were already up and running, and I’m really impressed. They wanted it to be a completely student-run organization, and that’s impressive for me.”
