Men’s Soccer
Entering the week, two Pacers were named to the Atlantic East Conference Weekly Honor Roll. Senior Danny Gomez and sophomore Drew Smith were the two Marywood representatives of this week’s honor roll.
Looking to extend the win streak, the Pacers hosted the SUNY-Delhi Broncos. Neither squad was able to get going offensively until the 12th minute, when the Pacers missed high of the net. After another Pacers miss, the Broncos looked to score, being denied by Kelton Ostrander. Marywood flipped control and capitalized, when Gomez netted his third goal of the season. Marywood continued to threaten but were rejected as the halftime whistle sounded.
Both teams spent the majority of the first 15 minutes of the second half deep in the Broncos’ third, as Marywood continued to extend the lead, though unsuccessful. After a Broncos 65th minute corner kick, Marywood was attacking again but Salvatore Meloni kept the Pacers at bay. A quick trip to the other end delayed the next Pacers attack, before Kyle Falcon netted the nail in the coffin, 2-0.
Following the victory, the Utica University Pioneers traveled to Scranton. The Pacers were put on their heels, with Utica controlling possession, resulting in an 11th minute goal from sophomore Martin Mendoza. The Pioneers continued their pressure, leading to a lead extension from Brady Barnard. Falcon attempted to erase the Pacers’ goose egg but was denied, leading to another period of control for Utica. The Pacers were able to keep the deficit at two going into the half.
To open the second half, the Pacers and Pioneers traded runs of field control, culminating in a goal from Nolan Kozera to trim the lead. Marywood was feisty, continuing the attack to try to tie the match, with shots being denied by Foti Xidias. After a 89th minute shot by Alex Visha was saved, Utica switched the play, bolting downfield and scoring via Carson Rother to put the match on ice, 3-1.
Women’s Soccer
Graduate defender Britlyn Higgins earned her second consecutive Atlantic East Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Caroline Walters was named to the conference Weekly Honor Roll.
Marywood looked to return to the win column, playing host to the Mount Saint Mary College Knights. Both offenses struggled early, with the Pacers breaking the shotless start. Neither team was able to dominate offensively, with just five shots combined between the two teams, as the halftime break rolled around tied at zero.
Marywood opened the second half pressuring the Knights defense, finally breaking through in the 53rd minute, when Walters set up Rylee Alston for the finish. Marywood was relentless offensively, missing the mark, until the Knights were able to get on the attack, with Kaelyn Greene hitting an equalizer in the 85th minute. The Knights had one last shot to steal the victory but were stopped by Genevieve Morrison. The final buzzer sounded and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
After a long trip, Marywood was down at Stockton University to face the Ospreys. Marywood opened the match attacking but it was Stockton that would strike first, as Kylee Reissek would find the back of the net in the 11th minute. The Ospreys and Pacers would both take two shots and earn a corner but the score remained 1-0.
The first 30-plus minutes of the second half were in favor of the Ospreys, with Stockton taking numerous shots and earning two corner kicks. Marywood was finally able to have some offense of its own but both shots would be saved, as Stockton would win, 1-0.
Field Hockey
Corrin Hasty earned Atlantic East Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts during the Pacers wins over Keystone and St. John Fisher. Dariane Jones was elected to the Weekly Honor Roll.
The Pacers took the trip downtown, facing the University of Scranton Royals. Marywood opened the attacking, firing two shots in the first minute, before the Royals had a flurry of offense of its own. The second period was more of the same, with both squads having runs of offense but to no prevail, as the game was knotted at halftime.
After the intermission, Marywood attacked early, finally opening the scoring, with Jones netting her fifth goal of the year. The Royals dominated the attack the remainder of the third, tying the game in the 42nd minute, off the stick of Annie Shaw. The fourth period started and the Royals struck again, as Ava De Natale gave Scranton its first lead of the day. Scranton dominated the rest of the period, holding Marywood shotless and securing the victory, 2-1.
Following the defeat, Marywood hosted the #21 ranked University of Rochester Yellowjackets. Rochester threatened first but Marywood was the first to score, thanks to Maria Tomada’s third minute goal. The Yellowjackets controlled the rest of the first, knotting the match, when Kristina Fedorova scored in the 11th minute. The second was more even, with both teams having spurts of offense but the game remained tied.
Coming out of the break, Rochester commanded the first five minutes, before Marywood controlled the rest of the third period but still the game remained 1-1. Rochester opened the fourth period on fire, with Grayson Honig and Hannah Mehta both scoring. Tomada was able to make the game 3-2 in the 55th minute but that was all the offense Marywood could muster, dropping its second straight game.
Volleyball
Marywood started its week hosting Penn State Berks. Marywood started the match hot, taking the first set 25-16, having a three-point advantage through the set. The second set started tight, tied at six, before the Nittany Lions took over, winning 25-16. Marywood was able to hold an early third set lead but a six-point swing gave Penn State a lead that wouldn’t be relinquished, 25-18. The Pacers and Nittany Lions were even at 10, before Penn State was able to take the lead. Despite a late set comeback, the Pacers dropped the set and the match 25-21.
The Pacers traveled to Elmira College for a tri-match, beginning with the Soaring Eagles. Elmira held an early lead but Marywood was able to overcome it and take an 11-9 advantage. The Soaring Eagles went on a 10-point run, icing the first set 25-15. Elmira kept the Pacers at arms distance at the beginning of the set, before Marywood was able to whittle away at the lead, tying it at 25. Elmira was able to win the next two points and take the set, 27-25. The Pacers had shot all of its bullets in the second set, as the Soaring Eagles handled the Pacers in the third set, sweeping Marywood 25-12.
Looking to salvage the day, Marywood followed up the loss with a match against the Misericordia University Cougars. The Cougars made quick work of the Pacers in the first set, winning 25-13. Although Marywood started the scoring in the second set, the Cougars scored 11 straight points and powered past the Pacers 25-12. Marywood started the third set with four straight points, holding a 8-7 lead, before an 18-3 run from the Cougars finished off the second Pacers sweep, 25-12.
Men’s Tennis
Marywood started its fall season off by hosting the Susquehanna University River Hawks. The Pacers were swept clean, failing to take a single match.
Women’s Tennis
The Pacers hosted the River Hawks of Susquehanna to kick off its season. Marywood took two of the three doubles matches. Gabriella Nowak, Faith Kendricks, Kylie Kilgore, Alex Vitale and Avianna Santarelli were all victorious in their singles matches, with the Pacers taking the victory 7-2.
Men’s Golf
The Pacers started its season against the Misericordia University Cougars. Junior Ben Galko was the Pacers low scorer, shooting four over par, which was tied for first. Despite having the leader, Marywood lost 349-326.
